"Survivors Of An Extraordinary Accident"

A 1,000 pound Elk killed by my husband in 1975. Two other Elk racks are hanging beside this one. 1-4-2018 Perryton, TX.

While having lunch with a friend at the Center yesterday she was telling me about an accident her son, and his wife recently had while driving back from Amarillo. A 1,000 pound Elk jumped in front of their vehicle while they were driving at the normal speed, 75 miles per hour. The Elk was killed, and the vehicle was totally wrecked. Neither of the occupants were injured. What is so unusual about this accident is that the area which it happened in is about 300 miles from any Elk population. The only Elk in that vicinity are a few that have been hauled here and fenced in. No report of any loose Elk have been discovered. The possibility of such dry weather in Colorado could have been the reason for the Elk being there. It was reported that a herd of about twelve Elk had been seen by another person in that area. The reason being they were looking for water.

The Elk I posted was killed by my husband in about 1975 high up in the mountains out of Chama, New Mexico. It weighed about 1,000 plus pounds. It had to be quartered in order to bring it down from the high mountain where it was bagged. Several guys were involved in getting it to lower ground. When the meat was processed it was shared with several families. On either side of the big Elk’s head is two other Elk racks that my husband killed. Only part of these horns are visible. If my husband was still alive he would not believe that a 1,000 pound Elk was roaming in the plains of West Texas. Just a short distance from where he lived. There is hardly any hills here must less mountains. But one thing for sure he would be excited, and would start investigating. This man, and his wife who were victims of the terrible tragedy are very thankful to be alive. Who knows why, and if unusual accidents such as this, will continue in our isolated plains area of big game wild life. We have had a problem with deer in this area, but never Elk, buffalo or wild hogs.

I have been gone most of the day, but have caught a bit or two of the latest news. It seems to be getting more complicated every day. I think the big buck Elk from the original herd of President Trump’s team, has drifted off to cause some deadly crashes to innocent people. I think we need to call in all prized hunters, and offer them a reward to kill the roaming, yes, out of place, big bucks. If that sounds too harsh then we need to at least offer a prize for bringing them in to captivity alive. Some have definitely drifted out of their boundaries. We cannot let them go free to do more deadly attempts. I doubt there is strong enough jail cells to contain some of these monstrous, wild beasts, that now are roaming rampant. Jails are not the answer. What then is the answer? Big game hunters with the deadliest bullet rifles made. How about a 308 mag? It wouldn’t leave any standing. I have rattled off to the extreme nonsense, but I truly am upset about some of the mean spirited people we thought we could trust.

God Bless
